Something I've been wondering /sci/

In quantum mechanics you only ever hear about the act of measuring some property, but is it possible to do a partial observation?

For example, instead of "measuring it's position" can you check to see if the particle is in a certain region?

Obviously if it is there then the outcome is the same, but what happens to the state of the particle of it is found to NOT be in that region?
I would imagine that all other probabilities would increase the more you rule out certain possibilities.

Or is it just not possible? Although I can't imagine why it wouldn't be.
