I suggest you understand evolution yourself to a level where you can explain it to someone. If you don't understand it to that level, there's no reason you should be defending it so vehemently.

I'd give a basic rundown of natural selection and go on to say how the small changes it produces accumulate and eventually lead to speciation, which often involves geographic separation of populations.
