DNA replication is not a perfect process. There are many mechanisms that act as built-in safeties, proving that nature is aware of its own inaccuracy.

What is astounding is that this stupendously complex operation took only 4500 millions years to develop. I suspect it may have been around quite a bit longer, i.e. panspermia theory.
