Not him, but surely you did not miss his point. Neither satellite communications nor the Internet existed back when somebody would have possibly asked the "guy with a horse" question. Somebody (multiple somebodies) had to get busy, invent stuff, do research, and all that good shit. They had to develop telegraphs and telephones and radios and electronics along the way. And we now have systems in place that the smartest men alive back in the pony express days would have deemed impossible.

So is fossil fuel burning really the only way to power a modern world economy? It is right now -- just as the horse and rider and written message were back then. I wonder if we could find better ways, without hamstringing the economy, if we put the effort in.
