The oncologist then discusses alien genetics. Some species use DNA, while some use the much simpler TNA. After analyzing the gene sequences of several aliens and their cancer, he notices something in common between all the cancers. Their genesequences are exactly the same as the host with the exception of 2% of the DNA/TNA. It appears to be the same sort of coding from endogenous retroviruses, but the oncologist rules them out as even they would be too complex to be able to affect different species with completely different evolutionary histories. He believes that most likely it is some sort of prion, perhaps made of TNA, that would allow it to dublex with DNA

Still, there are many things that he doesn't understand about it. While these endogenous retrovirus can be found in the every single species on a compromised planet, the Cancer only affects a single particular species of a given world, generally the most dominant and intelligent. On top of this, he wonders if horizontal gene transfer could be even possible on such a large scale naturally. Something about the genes looks familiar, and he begins looking at a massive database of genomes across both species and time.

At last he understands it. The mystery of consciousness. of why the Cancer doesn't affect humans. And the final conclusion to what the cancer will bring forth. It already infected Earth, about 50,000 years ago

How bad did I fuck up, /sci/?
