I think he made some good points.

When I was in high school, the common remark students made, in math class, was: "When am I going to use this in the real world?" I never remember this question being asked in History, Science or English. A common answer, a teacher would say, was: "Well if you want to be an engineer or a scientist, you need to know this," the teacher would add something along the lines of having to learn it to not limit your-self in case you wanted to major in a STEM field, when you got to college. But to the vast majority of students, young adults who wanted to be firefighters, managers, TV reporters, moms, mechanics, rock stars: they would never use any of it.

How ever useful math may be to the functioning of society, none of this usefulness is ever described in education, except in a few footnotes in a text book. Most of what is presented is a collection of specific algorithms, which need to be memorized, yet could be readily be automated. This is very insulting to students. I think that the future of math education lies in teaching "citizen statistics". Classes that teach the broad brush strokes of math, rather than the specific, largely unnecessary, details.
