Nah, it is the East Asian way to adapt to nerfing by getting better. It further widens the perceived skill gap between a model minority and an "oppressed" minority.

No shit, this divide was large enough to the point where it wasn't difficult to be the standout student even five years ago. I'm not smart or skilled by any measure but the rate that peers were learning at was suffocating. The standard is rock bottom and tunneling underground. Eventually they'll hit mantle and burn themselves badly for it.

These days, all it takes to be considered a fantastic student/pupil is an avid interest in self-directed learning and practice. This used to be the bare minimum standard in decades past and now it's considered exemplary. I felt frustrated at how low the standard was, because I never felt like I've earned anything worthwhile from higher education.
