>Russia was on track to a famine due to simple malthusian pressures
this was demonstrably untrue. it absolutely WAS an evil gommunism thing, and specifically a farm collectivization thing - a stalin-was-a-more-doctrinaire-communist-than-lenin thing. agricultural production in russia was rising faster than population under the tsars, but stalin decided that the kulaks were doing too well by the late 1920s and that this was a threat to communism. his reforms crashed agricultural production to well below 1913 levels during holodomor, and this was at least somewhat intentional - he was happy that farmers who had resisted socialism were being wiped out.
