It's really all about hygiene. You're likely to be a part of a lower education system if you spend all your time on appearance. Anyone has the potential to be beautiful (Albeit some minor outliers such as inbred, physical diseases like polio, etc)
It all just takes the mindset to be self aware of your outward appearance. I remember seeing the smarter kids through high school that had greasy hair, not very impressive physique and generally had an atmosphere that didn't hold any dominance, but he was a genius.

So for anyone to ask "is there a correlation" they'd just have to view the character's daily schedule, see what they focus on and what kind of role model they had as a kid. You don't see kids in the ghetto being brought up with Bill Nye, or at least not often.

This is unsourced, and from my perspective. Shit like this is pretty much pseudo Science.
