There's a big difference between deciding to do something for a purpose vs. evolutionary biology which is a retrospective look at whatever emerged and persisted long enough for us to know about it.
Calling that purpose is literally backwards thinking. It's not that an organisms does what it does to not die out. It doesn't die out because of what it does, which might sound similar but it's really not.
e.g. Bacteria don't purposefully build up a resistance to antibiotics. What happens is the antibiotics kill most of the bacteria and it's a tautology whatever *didn't* get killed probably had some traits that happen to make it less vulnerable to those antibiotics than other instances of bacteria are.
Nature's just throwing a bunch of shit on the wall and some of it inevitably sticks.
