it depends on the temperature. the density of water is highest at 4°C. then it goes in a smooth down curve as the temperature is raised or lowered

so an ice cube at around 0°C will sink to the bottom of a container with water at 10°C but as the block gets colder it will eventually float

Some event (usually suspected to be changes in earths orbit, since it's they are so regular), cause a increase in global temperatures. This increase causes CO2 outgassing of the oceans (on that timescale well-mixed, unlike ours currently).
The additional CO2 causes more warming by the greenhouse effect, which causes more outgassing, which causes more warming, etc, until a new equilibrium temperature is reached (since the oceans have only a limited amount of CO2 dissolved in it).
That's why the warming is always sudden and fast, while colling is slow and irregular, since there's a strong positive feedback loop. Mind that those feedback loops and the change in earths orbit are on the timescale of millennia, they could neither explain the current warming, nor the current increase in CO2.
Rather, we put very, very large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere that have been excluded from the biosphere since millions of years. We completely circumvent the the "old" system, simply putting massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, which cause the warming all by itself. That's why you can't directly compare the milankovitch cycle with the current period.
