Dear /sci/,

Would it be of any use to mathematics if I found such a number?

So /sci/, I know you guys always dream of getting into a top university or are already on one and most of you are only undergrads.

But I want to ask out of curiosity, if you're going to pursue a PhD, who would you like/have liked to have as a PhD advisor, /sci/?
It can be anyone from history or alive by the way.

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ... = -1/12

This is due to Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem, and can be proven using a triple integral technique devised by Harvard researchers.

Did I do good, autists?

How can one prove this conjecture, /sci/?

My question isn't about the Collatz conjecture, but slightly related.

If you take the number 3, and continually multiply it by 3 and add 1, giving the sequence, 3, 10, 31, 94, etc. Will you eventually hit a power of 2

computer programmers actually think this is math.

i'm not talking about the collatz conjecture. i'm talking about the picture.

Get it out of me pls, I'm dying...dyiiiiing but I won't be alone now

Let <span class="math">n>0
Then it is <span class="math">\frac{n}{2}
if n is even AND it is
<span class="math">3n+1
if n is odd.

=> Every sequence ends with the cycle 4,2,1

Hey /sci/, I have a game for you. The point of the game is to represent as many numbers as possible using four 2's and the operations of +,-,x,/, exponentiation, root extraction and factorials. So for example:
1= (2+2)/(2+2)
2=(2/2)+(2/2)
etc...
I've gotten up to 26 with the exception of 7,17 and 19. How well can you do?

Listen up, /sci/ducks and newcomers alike. I personally am sick of homework, religion and troll questions that are guaranteed 100+ replies.

Here's some advice for you. Install the 4chan addon for Firefox, and hide any troll threads you see, so you're not tempted to reply when you see them again. You can find it here:
http://www.4chan.org/tools/

Troll threads include ones complaining about either side of the religion debate, that look like they're by Aether, have questions such as the 0.999... = 1 debate or the boy/girl paradox or make your common sense tingle.

I'm going to post some links for people to answer the questions they always have when they come. I do want you all to learn, after all. I'd just prefer /sci/ was discussing science and math than repeatedly teaching basic concepts to people.

>If you're not a lazy fuck and actually want to understand math better, use this site. Only does high school math.

http://ocw.mit.edu/
>A fair bit of MIT's lectures, problem sets, etc. You're not guaranteed all the course material, but the introductory courses seem to be covered fairly well.

>Same as MIT OCW, except for Yale. Haven't used it myself.

I'm hoping this can get stickied, so I'm not posting copyrighted material, sorry.

Posting xkcd because it's kinda /sci/ related and is creative commons.
