Because there is a quantity called the invariant interval where you multiply time by c and use it in a Pythagorean theorem like equation. Using time as a dimension with units of length is physically useful.

because spacetime interval is invariant.

you can think of this simple 2d analog with a right triangle. the spacetime interval is the hypotenuse, adj/opp are time and distance.

the only way to travel increasingly larger distances (ie at relativistic speed) is to shorten the time side, thus slowing the perception of time.
