If they don't, why was it is a big deal a few months ago? That was the top thing being preached until the masks went from "don't wear them, they don't stop to virus" to "WEAR MASKS!" to "masks don't matter, black lives matter" and then back to "WEAR MASKS!".
If handwashing isn't important, why the big push early on? If handwashing is important, why suddenly stop pushing for it?

It depends on what the massive crowd is protesting. The virus is smart enough to know if a protest is good or evil. Also as long as you have a mask with you, it doesn't really matter if you wear it correctly or at all if you're protesting for the correct cause.

Funny how "research" said the exact opposite for the much smaller protests over the lockdown. It's almost as if the medical community is political and cannot be trusted.

Once the riots were declared to be ok from a public health perspective, all credibility was lost. The earlier lies were bad enough but this established a pattern of behavior on the part of the medical authorities. They will never get that credibility back. They will forever have to rely on government authoritarianism to get cooperation. Even then you're going to have situations like Lincoln County, Oregon where only white people are required to wear masks. The whole thing is a farce. Don't want to get the virus? Stay away from people. Some fabric on your face isn't going to amerurate the danger from being around a constant stream of people. Distance should be the dominate message instead of masks. But they won't do that because then city people who live on top of each other all day long might have to make changes to their daily lives. Slapping on a mask is a great placebo.

The funny part is where the media insisted over and over again that it was ok because they were all wearing pieces of tissue on their faces. I've yet to see one riot photo where everyone has on a mask. Nor have I seen one "peaceful protest" photo without someone touching their mask and others without their noses uncovered.
