No responses yesterday, I believe it sank to the bottom of the board before catching the eye of anyone interested ; so I'll repost it : This is chess/algebra problem time!

The first part of the problem is about a chess grid. How many POSSIBLE (be careful about bishops!) different positions is there at a given time, If :
- pawns can't stray further than 3 columns of their initial column?
- pawns can go all the way to 6 columns to the left or the right?
- pawns can't take other pieces diagonnally?

Second part : What is the probability that the same position arises in two consecutives games of 50 moves? 100 moves?

Third part : how many different chess game can you play, assuming that you can't go back from one position to the previous one (i.e repeating one move)?
Note : chess rules actually allow up to three repeating positions before the game is declared null.

Good luck!

From Relativistic jet:
>The hypothesis is that the twisting of magnetic fields in the accretion disk collimates the outflow along the rotation axis of the central object, so that when conditions are suitable, a jet will emerge from each face of the accretion disk. If the jet is oriented along the line of sight to Earth, relativistic beaming will change its apparent brightness. The mechanics behind both the creation of the jets and the composition of the jets are still a matter of much debate in the scientific community; it is hypothesized that the jets are composed of an electrically neutral mixture of electrons, positrons, and protons in some proportion.

This should be a good enough answer for you. I mean could you even follow the mechanics if they new it percisely? NO! The hypothesis is all you could even try to understand anyway.

Basically, the rotation severly warps the magnetic field. If you recall the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairy_ball_theorem
Then it makes perfect sense how the pole (center of rotation) develops this jets.

It is a nice math. But it is only a math. Until M-theory makes some actual testable prediction, it is not considered science.

Future yes! Past yes!
But the past is (as of yet) not practicle in anysense.

In special realitivity you can try and construct a reference frame, such that the past becomes the future and visa verse. (everything is about reference frame). You end up failing becuase of the relationship between an object position and its momemtum, and the speed of light being constant.

However, if I incoperate quantum mehcincs into the mix, i no longer have this realtionship. I have an uncertainity between shit. I will get reference frames where the past and future switch. There is no loger a prefered direction of time on the quantum scale.

In order for any of that shit to make sense, then every partciel must have a "equivalent particle" in the time reversed frame.

And HENCE WE HAVE ANIT-PARTICLES!

>Using strings, the Double Slit Experiment makes sense.

LMAO, using Quantum electrodynamics (which is the most accurate scientific model even made) the Double slit experiment makes sense.

String theory is not considered science or physics in general. Again, it has no evidence or predictive power, it is just a fancy math, with no known tie to actual reality.

Good Question

This is a good explation of heat
>>2336766

>Why infared

Basically, most things are constantly absorbing/emmting photons. This is just a natural consequency of everything having electrons (as well as other fundmental particles). The human body will naturally emit/absorb photons in a certin range energy range, this is the infrared range.

>Why we precieve it as heat

The more energteic a photon is, the more kinetic energy it has, the more it contributes to a higher tempeture (basic defintions of temperature). So, higher temperture produces higher energy photons.

So, if person "X" is at higher temperture then person "Y", we should see higer energy infared from person "X". Which means that the infared frequency of the photons coming off of person "X" will be higher then that of person "Y".
Hence infared can be directly correlated to thermal tempreture.

Good question.......

The QM you are refering to is a very very dumbed down version of the real type of Quantum Mechanics physicst actually use.

Physicist actually use a type of Quantum called QFT (quantum field theory). In QFT we do incoperate Special relativity, hence time is a dimension. QFT is the standard which physicist use.

What wave eq are you refering to?

The general mathematical def, the QM def, the classical def?

Without anyother restrictions?
In that case, the answer in no.

Yesterday there was a thread about the top 10 Scientists of the world according to their contributions to science.

This is what we got:
1) Newton
2) Einstein
3) Darwin
4) Planck
5) Maxwell
6) Faraday
7) Bohr
8) Mendel
9) Lyell
10)Mendeleev

Now it is time just for physics! We can take over all the physicists from that list already, so we have this:

1) Newton
2) Einstein
3) Planck
4) Maxwell
5) Faraday
6) Bohr

Who else should go in?

Here are some ideas:

Galileo, Marie Curie, ???

>The model developed by the Polish-US team suggests that the boundary between the Local Cloud and the Local Bubble might be not within a few light years from the Sun, as it was believed earlier, but within just a thousand of astronomical units, a thousand-fold closer. This might mean that the Solar System could enter the million-degree Local Bubble cloud as early as the next century.
