op check out brian greene's books the elegant universe,
fabric of the cosmos, and maybe his new one parallel
worlds or something i haven't read it.
lisa randall's warped passage wasn't that bad but
brian greene personally is best.
richard dawkins for to help with your science and
love for it. especially the god delusion. it will increase
your enthusiasm for science.
personally i'm not with a lot of the /sci/borgs here on
carl sagan. yes he is a great and supreme figure to
science. but his books were a bit hard for me. idk why.
same with hawkings.
i didn't like any of kaku's books. they were to much in
the realm of fiction and shit for me.
neil degrasse tyson's book that also got turned into a
nova series was also decent.
hope that helps op. i give you two thumbs up for the
change. we need people like you to devote their lives
for science.

it's never to late. look at evariste galois this guy is one of
my heroes. he's a genius studied math by himself pretty
much turned insane and died in a duel. yutaka taniyama's
story is also depressing. a lot of people studied math in
times where it was difficult surviving each day. personally
i don't think i would be ballsy enough to switch
occupations while in your situation. not sure if i have an
answer to your question sorry broseph.
