So the physical sciences have become pretty much redundant right?

What important new physical discovery has been made in the past 2 decades?
Zilch.

I think it's time to stop wasting the greatest and brightest of our generation on a fool's errand to answer questions that will never be answered. We've reached the limits of human scientific capability.

Pic related. The last noteworthy physicist who got fame doing science, not making tv shows or writing books.

2. A 1.0 kg wood block is on the edge of a table, which top is 1.0 m above the ground. A 15 g bullet strikes and lodges into the block. The block lands on the ground 0.75 m from the edge of the table.
What was the bullet’s velocity when it struck the bock? Assume no loss of energy.

What the hell is going on here?!

I'm curious. What are you people here studying? I have been wondering how many of you were in a hard science meant to go on to grad school for additional training / research (physics/chemistry/biology) and how many of you were in things that are more meant to be used for a job right outside of being an undergrad (all engineering/basically everything else)

I'm in a physics major. It's scary, since you basically have to do another 7 years of schooling after being an undergrad, it's a big commitment, but I love it so much I think it's what I wanna do.

this got me thinking

OK, considering the Law of Conservation of Energy, energy is neither created nor destroyed, but transformed.

now, knowing this, lets say a ball is held by my hand. it has potential energy. i release the ball, and it falls with kinetic energy. (very simple exampe, but not the point.

so, doesnt this constitute that we have an unlimited source of energy in the universe? if everyone were to hold a ball and then drop it, this transformation of energy can be infinite.

we are not creating energy, but accessing it from a pool of infinity

discuss

What's the current consensus on the idea that mathematical/technical ability diminishes sharply after your 20s?

I see some people point to a mathematician or physicist that's like 31 years old and talk about how he's past his prime. Wtf, you're barely a few years out of grad school at that point. Is there any truth to this or is it something aspies tell themselves to excuse their lack of original mathematical insight? I've even heard of companies in engineering and applied research industries denying job applicants on the basis that they were "past their technical prime" (> ~35 years old).

I guess a lot of famous mathematicians did great work young. Galois immediately comes to mind. Counterexamples? People that did great work in their later years?

How many of you have jobs in physics? What do you do?

Hey /sci/,

Studying which of the three sciences--biology, chemistry, or physics--will be best for entrepreneurship in five years time?

I know there is a lot of industry activity going on right now with biotechnology, but I'm not sure where that's headed. And of course, physics is the perennial best bet in terms of flexibility and wages, though entrepreneurial endeavours may be a different story.

inb4 engineering, fuck dat

Is a PhD in Physics as useless as everybody is telling me? I just finished my B.S and I'm off for graduate studies soon. Should I switch to math?

These are some pretty simple questions but I'm actually a retard can you help me out?
1. A 220 kg car is travelling at 45 km/h when its brakes are applied and it skids to a stop. If the coefficient of friction between the road and the tires is 0.70, how far does the car go before stopping?

2. Using a slingshot, you fire a stone horizontally from a tower that is 27m tall. It lands 122 m from the base of the tower. What was its initial velocity?

3. You throw a ball with a velcoty of 18 m/s at 24(degrees) above the horizontal from the top of your garage. 5.8 m above the ground. Calculate the
(a) time of flight
(b) horizontal range
(c) maximum height
(d) velocity when the ball is 2.0 m above the roof
(e) angle at which the ball hits the ground

Yes and Einstein was a genius.

Therefore using your own logic, all white scientists are smarter than all black scientists are smarter than all of /sci/

Incase you didn't decipher this from the above: Individuals mean nothing you need to look at data sets.
