This all seems anecdotal.
From my own (also anecdotal) experience, I've met just as many right-leaning math students as I met left-leaning ones.
There's at least a slight left-wing bias in most universities anyway.
A lot of math students I know are apolitical, too.
I used to be very clearly right-leaning both economically and socially when I was a freshman/sophomore. Then I mellowed out, and now I'm just annoyed by demagogy than anything else, although I still lean right on most issues except some social ones. Politics ended up boring me.
I don't think there's a particular political tendency among mathematicians.
Left-leaning professors seem overrepresented because they're usually the ones who express their opinions, but I guarantee that (at my university's faculty at least), a lot of them are conservative and/or libertarian and just don't talk much about it.
The professors I'm on familiar terms with as well as myself all seem to have adopted an "as long as nobody bothers me, I don't really care" approach to economic and social issues. It's rare to hear people discuss politics in a math research group.

Explain this. Even if IQ changes as time goes on, I should still be around two standard deviations above the mean, yet I don't feel intelligent and I have no achievements to speak of.
