So then what is consciousness? What is its purpose? Consciousness can be thought of as the RAM to the computer which is our body and brain. While some of our neurons are making simple calculations such as physical reactions to sudden pain, our consciousness is that which handles the more complex computations. Without consciousness (as I have defined it above - a compilation of instantaneous perceptions), we would be left with just perception and hardwired reactions. In effect, we are stripped down to our instincts, void of capacity for reason and evaluation. This is why other animals with brains that have less input receptors and working memory react with fight or flight tendencies.
