All that shit you use is just leading order approximations.

This is a crankish question from someone who never took above freshman physics.

How is it that space can be bent without the existence of an extra dimension? If I want to bend a straight line, there has to be an extra dimension that I bend it in. A line on the X axis can be bent along the Y axis. Without the Y axis the most you can do is compress & stretch the line along the X axis.

So is general relativity actually talking about the compression and stretching of space or is it really about "bending" but just doesn't go into any detail about this additional dimension?

>do the math and fake all the results for the experiments we never did

Sorry to disapoint you, but no one really gives a shit about a space elevator (i'm sure a few labs). A space elevator isn't really on the science "do-to" list right now.

I would say if more people got actively involved maybe it could be done in 20-50 years. But chances are, it will never be done. Likely, we will just improve space/air travel (much more research is being focused on that).

Space elevators just don't seem to have any real "must have benefits", and the little benefits they do have opposed to other space travel will become obsolete in the near future.
