Getting to Mars using chemical propulsion is feasible, it's just that NTRs makes the trip easier. SpaceX is most likely sticking to chemical to keep the costs down for now since going for nuclear technology as a private company comes with steep fees.

Orion project was too fucking rad for this world.
Ironically the whole idea of putting guns to it was just a desperate try to grab the attention of higher-ups. Instead it got the project cancelled forever.
Oh well. The world wasn't ready for thousands of mini-nukes anyway.
