Yeah, because the signal involved is fucking tiny. You need silver / silver chloride electrodes with preamplifiers built into them in contact with the scalp through conducting gel, amplified by a 25.000 dollar amplifier to even be able to pick up a signal. It just doesn't conduct far enough outside of the head (pic related).

Question for the bio/neuro fags:

So if evoked potentials can be explained by event related synchronized oscillatory activity, how can we differentiate by multiple cortical current sources or a single thalamic generator?
