Radiotherapy uses directed radiation to damage cancer cells. Since you can generate a focused beam, it's possible to hit the tumor without really damaging anything else. (Or you could put a radiation source at one focus of an ellipsoid reflector and position the patient so that the tumor is at the other focus, and carry out an even more precise strike. Some new therapies use this.)
Chemotherapy puts toxins into your system that are taken up most rapidly by cells that are undergoing a lot of division (such as malignant cancers). Unfortunately, some other tissue types get hit too because they're constantly growing (such as hair follicles, which is why people undergoing chemo go temporarily bald).
Chemo and radio work pretty damned well. They do have unpleasant side effects, but better than slowly dying from cancer. You don't know the first thing you're talking about.
