It's a bit like curing aging; There's no single physiological limit, but rather when you correct each one, you run into another and must then correct that. Things like collapsible lungs; Whales have 'em, it's how they dive down 2 miles. Suppressing brain activity too, as otherwise your neurons go ballistic below 2,300 feet. Then there's some sort of artificial gill, as carrying compressed breathing gases that deep with you in an ambient pressure environment won't work; The pressure eventually becomes equal or so close to equal with what's in your tanks that you get only a few minutes use out of them.
