For the mathematicians and physicists of /sci/, was Feynman truly as great as people say?

I've been watching some of his lectures and interviews and he seems like a really hyperintelligent mind and a colourful character besides. A pretty cool guy.

I am making a new thread because the last thread regarding this was overrun by autists arguing about who has the highest IQ.

Let's discuss this like people with the slightest degree of intelligence because I actually want to know your opinions and I am sure others do too.

The last thread started briefly with the discussion of the effectiveness of the Feynman and Pomodoro Technique.

It is not unscientific to make a guess, although many people who are not in science think it is. Some years ago I had a conversation with a layman about flying saucers — because I am scientific I know all about flying saucers! I said “I don’t think there are flying saucers”. So my antagonist said, “Is it impossible that there are flying saucers? Can you prove that it’s impossible?” “No”, I said, “I can’t prove it’s impossible. It’s just very unlikely”. At that he said, “You are very unscientific. If you can’t prove it impossible then how can you say that it’s unlikely?” But that is the way that is scientific. It is scientific only to say what is more likely and what less likely, and not to be proving all the time the possible and impossible. To define what I mean, I might have said to him, "Listen, I mean that from my knowledge of the world that I see around me, I think that it is much more likely that the reports of flying saucers are the results of the known irrational characteristics of terrestrial intelligence than of the unknown rational efforts of extra-terrestrial intelligence." It is just more likely. That is all.

Quantum Field Theory

>Matter is just quanta of excitations of a field
>A standing wave on a string is a wave of matter which itself is a standing wave of a field.
>The thoughts in my brain or computer are electric fields oscillating and bouncing around matter which itself is an oscillation of a field, all interacting perfectly.
>There are millions of quanta in my little finger alone

Mindfuck general?

Hi sci,

I have a small question for you: I'm planning to study math, but I'm thinking about also doing physics, so I'd be doing two bachelors. How much harder is it to do both? Any experience? (My iq is measured in the 150-160 range by the way.)

Well, that, or it's just this one time travelling electron jumping back and forth between all the atoms.

>better way

Use actual physics and understand what is going on to simplify shit, instead of this pointlessly complicated engineering circle jerk method.

They initially use "F" and "g" from universal gravitaion between point masses, then get "cube V" from integration of this. Then get "cube g" from differentation of "cube V". WHAT THE FUCK? This is some really sloppy circular nonsense shit. It is needlessly complicated.

>Lets integrate them immediatly differentiate?!

Goddamm...that is some A+ faggotry. There is NO FUCKING NEED to break everything down to point particles and then build a cube! Just start off with a "cube g"! Derive is equation directly from basic fucking physics (Gauss's law for gravity)! The math is alot simplier.

Goddamit that paper is retarded. It is like a little kid trying to explain everything through newtonian mechanics, instead of lagragian shit. Or like the biologist who "discovered" basic calculus.

You can tell he was nothing more than a lowly dumb engineer undergrad.

If people resent Neil Degrasse Tyson, why do they NOT resent Feynman?

The Feynman Lectures is full of some gems, sure, but you really haven't read it and understood it if you didn't find some terrible analogies inside that would only serve to confuse even students of science.

Why does this double standard for popular science figures exist?

Is there something inherently wrong/childish/trivial/silly/babbyish about constructing the real numbers through Dedekind cuts?

I will elaborate, but will refrain for now as not to introduce bias.

Dark Matter = a particle that interacts very very very very very very very very very very fucking weakly through all forces (except Grav).

We don't even have sufficient data to really detect grav of individual particle yet, how the fuck are we supposed to detect what dark matter actually is (what particle/properties).

WE need more data, that is all there is too it. We don't face a lack of theory or cleverness, we fucking face a lack of data. Until we have more data we really cant do much. It is likely that questions concerning dark matter wont be fully resolved until we explore space.

dude, no one was prolific in the 60's, 70's, and 80's.
you don't have to be prolific all the time to be a fantastic scientist. Einstein too didn't do much after GR. that doesn't mean his ideas didn't revolutionize the world.

also he was kinda battling 2 types of cancer. he did his best to ignore it, but dude, it's fucking double cancer.
