Scientifically speaking, where does the week come from? does /sci/ know?

The year comes from the sun, the month comes from the moon (adjusted to align with year), but there is no astronomical reason for 7-day weeks

Frog/Snails eater here. Signed for a PhD in one of the top univ in Asia to buy myself 3 more years of (((freedom))) however I have no idea what is a PhD. Seems like I just need to go full autistic during 3 years on my subject but it can't be that easy is it ? The field is deep learning

I hate math. I have pretty good mathematical intuition and a strongly analytical mindset, but I just can't handle mathematical notation, on a purely psychological level. As soon as I see it, my eyes glaze over and my mind stops trying to interpret the information. It just looks like a schizo symbol salad and the mere thought of trying to decipher it, immediately tires me. Why do you little sinkers always use single letter variable names? Why do you use such obtuse syntax and rely so heavily on operator overload? Why does mathematical notation look like a fucking APL program? Unfortunately, I find myself in a position where I need to get through a bunch of books full of your stupid notations. How can I cope with this?

Physicists solve problems faster. and are better in doing Mental calculations on spot.

Mathematicians are slower, spend more time and lines to proof things with an often unnecessary and pedantic Rigour.

Physicist answers are more concise with fewer lines.
While mathematicians are too verbose and love to waste several pages to solve a problem that just need a few lines.

Great minds have produced great technology but the harsh reality is that operation of that technology over the long term will be conducted by staggeringly normal minds within ordinary, flawed, ultimately unstable societies.

This is a rational basis on which to expect nuclear power to always lead to disaster.

Nuclear proponents are invariably naive morons that believe because their chosen cause is OMG PEAK SCIENCE any dissent must be ludditism.

Nope, we just understand more about human behavior than you autists.

why dont we use gambling in schools? like you create a gambling type of game where the students know the rules and odds. They put down a bet, depending on how they do on a test they get 2x their bet or lose their bet. I would never fail to study if that was the case i think i would get straight As..

What does it mean to be Somali?

If it means to be born into Somalian, then there are white Somalis and black Germans, and there's no genetic component. But people argue that race is genetic, so this can't be it.

If it means to have a certain DNA sequence, then there are Somalis who have never set foot in Somalia, and there are people born and raised in Somalia who aren't Somali. That tells me we should be using a different word.

If it means to have ancestors who were Somali, then you have a chicken-and-egg problem, because you can't show us the first Somalian.

If it means to practice the cultural rituals of Somalia, then anyone can become (or stop being) Somalian at any time, just by changing their behavior. Which is kind of silly.

There's no definition of "Somali" that doesn't fall apart under basic scrutiny. Apply to other nationalities as needed.
