We know exactly what keeps a bicycle stable. Humans are incredibly good at balancing acts. Any human can learn to perform a trick like the one in the pic as easily as they can learn to ride a bike. The question of what keeps a bike stable trolled scientists for a while because they were thinking it must be some special property of the bicycle.

Its commonly suggested that the wheels act like gyroscopes, but that's been disproved.

The answer is: Humans are just really fucking good at balancing on things. With some practice we can keep our balance on just about anything.. It gets to the point where you don't even think about it.
