It's literally a meme, in the traditional sense of the word. Their parents tell them it's hard from a young age, so they don't try and by default can't understand it.
Education, at least in the US, isn't doing enough to get people to care/rewire the meme though. I was good at math because I was autistic and genuinely liked it, but most people tune out at around trig/precalc because they don't see a "practical use for it".

ITT: people arguing how hard real analysis is when they mean complete different things.

In my uni we take analysis 1 & 2 in first year, basiclly "Spivak" analysis with epsilon-delta, Intermediate value theorem and such.

And then you take in your third or fourth year two real analysis courses after measure theory and topology courses. That deals which all the fun Borel sets, Lp spaces, covering theorms, Radon-Nikodym etc.

If OP struggles with something like the latter s/he has my symphaty

you dont think maths tripos at cambridge is harder than maths at a 300 in the world uni? come on. for the record, im completely non elitist about uni's. most of its just luck. but your delusional if you dont release that the work people do at top uni's isnt orders of magnitude greater than unknown ones. 1. they take people with a good work ethic, 2. they're hard to get into, hence people work harder otherwise its a waste, 3. because of 1 and 2, your peers are working harder, so you work harder to compete (if you've been to an elite uni/class, you know how true this is. if you've been ever been at a shit uni/class, you know how true the inverse is) and 4. a lot of elite uni's make the course harder because a. the students can take it, b. if standards fall, so does prestige

i might be able to list more reasons if i think of any, but, despite also being a meme, it really is true.

im honestly not trying to put you down or anything if you havent been to an """..."""elite""""..."""" (10^10^10 quotation marks) uni. just compare the published spec of identical courses at seperate uni's, or any tests if they are published.
