But, considering how quickly we've advanced on a cosmic scale, things are looking up so long as we don't end up killing ourselves as we're now oh-so capable. Civilization has existed for a sprite ten-thousand years or so, and we're already nearing clinical immortality.

Precisely. It's not quite so "fail, and face complete extinction" in the case of, say, a massive asteroid hurtling toward Earth, but there is apt incentive to adapt more quickly to other technologies, some of which do and do not yet exist. Certainly some may perish in the transition, you and I even, and many may face difficult times, but in the end we will survive as a whole; we will because we must.
