Because sending a human to mars is what's needed to revitalize the space program. Robots may be more efficient, but manned flight is the only thing that will ever get the general public excited.

I have a plan for the private colonization of the moon.

First SpaceX launches the bigelow aerospace Sundancer Inflatable habitation module into LEO and offers rides to it by its dragon spacecraft.
Later once Virgin galacticor Reaction engines limited creates a spaceplane that can get to LEO (probobly in late 10's or early 20's),If its Virgin galactic it will probobly be SpaceShipFour
because SS3 is going to be point to point suborbital. Then the ferrying of people to the Bigelow space stations can be taken over by one of these companies. By this point the Falcon 9 rocket
is expected to be completely reusable, and can be used to carry Cargo or Space station parts (Such as the BA 330) to LEO. By this point Access to LEO will be relativity cheap
and routine, with Cargo being carried to LEO by the reusable Falcon 9, and people by the SKYLON or one of SpaceShip series. Also we will have space station technology superior
to the international space station. Next you launch a bigelow space station into geostationary orbit around the earth to act as a transfer point to the moon. You can get
there using a modified Dragon SpaceCraft, you could make this craft small and without living space because its a relativity short trip.

Hello, /sci/, have anyone of you read NASA's Apollo 12 DSE "Black Box" Transcripts? There are some incredible things astronauts are describing, in fact, I'm reading it right now.

Also, here is a video of what I'm talking about:

Hello /sci/ I have yet again updated my plan
-Outline-

This is a plan to colonize mars and the moon and provide cheap travel between them, after building space infrastructure. First
we put a modular space station in an orbit around the earth, Then we take a reusable spacecraft and dock with the station. After that we take
a take a shuttle using VASIMR technology/chemical propulsion to a second station orbiting the moon. It depends if the nuclear technology required
to use VASIMR to its full potential is available or plausible to build at that time. Then use an advanced lunar lander to get to the moons surface.
Once on the moon build factories to create more stations, colonies, and spacecraft as in the long run it's cheaper to launch things off of
the moon.

I was recently thinking of a way to get to colonize mars and the moon and provide cheap travel between them,
after building space infrastructure. First we put a space station in an orbit around the earth, Then we
take reusable spacecraft and dock with the station. After that we take a small shuttle using VASIMR technology
to a second station orbiting the moon. Then use an advanced lunar lander to get to the moons surface. Once on the
moon build factories there to create more space infrastructure. In the long run it's cheaper to launch things off of
the moon. I envision a future where the only things carried off of earth are humans. Then once you have a lunar industry
going you can create an orbital shipyard to create a fleet of interplanetary spacecraft.

Then we can reliably colonize the red planet. While we are colonizing the moon and building factories, stations,
and spacecraft we should utilize the mars to stay plan. the point being to establish a presense on the red planet while we
build the infastrure required to make cheap reliable trips there possible. Also when they get to mars they will need to use
a mars lander due to the fact that VASIMR powered craft can only operate in space and does not have suiable thrust to escape
a planet's or moon's gravity.

Now the reason the moon is more cost effective in the long run, is that to colonize mars we need suplies carried
there. At 1/6 of earths gravity those launches over a long peroid of time would make it far easier/cheaper. The main point
of this plan is to create a long term plan for the colonization of mars and eventualy the solar system.
