>engineering takes work

Engineering takes "work", in the same sense being a janitor takes "work". You do alot of mindless gruntwork over and over again. I would say a monkey could do both jobs, but I doubt a monkey would be stupid enough to want to be an engineer. He would likely find it extremely boring.

>IIRC about 70% of the people working on CERN aren't actually at the facility at any point.

That number is way to high. Most people who work at CERN, will vistis CERN at some point. They may only go for 1 month a year, but they will still physically be there.

It is actually written in the bilaws, that the institutions using CERN must commit some actual amount of man power to CERN, this prevents the situation you are talking about. This man power may come from grad-students, post-docs, researchers, or professors.

>The place has its own tier 0 gateway and about 90% of the data crunching is outsourced to everywhere from argentina to Japan to the UK. Partially because their on site computers are actually pretty puny and partially because it allows for the 7000 or so collaborators to manipulate the data for themselves.

All initial data crucnhing is done at CERN on site. CMS alone analazes more then 25TB of data per second. CERN actually has fuckiing amazing computer resources better then anyother facility on earth. In fact I always tunnel into CERN and do my computations directly from there mainframes.

However, CERN developed a "Grid" computing system. This system is more for post collision, physics-analysis. This is what you must mean by outsourcing. The "Grid" is basically a collection of super-clusters and mainframes from all over the world. The Grid is the single most powerful computation machine around today. It is avalible to CERN users, many universities, national labratories, and many biomedical/medical labs/companies. It is insane how much you can get done on the GRID. You can have things processing parallel on all sorts of differnt mainframes all over the world.

CERN is very up to date on its computing resources. They employ many many top teir computer scientists and engineers. They even developed the world wide web at CERN.
