What is the proof for the square pyramidal number formula? I've been trying to find it as a fun exercise but so far I haven't got anything interesting. I've found that if you want to find for example the sum of all the perfect squares up to let's say the third one it will look like this:

1 + (1+3) + (1+3+5)

And continue by adding another number with an addition 2 added to it for every square. The issue is that I don't know how to turn this information into the formula. Any guidance?
