Sup guys, I need some help with understanding Lagrangian mechanics. I have no problem actually applying it, but the derivation is lost on me. I don't quite understand what makes the correct path stand out in the derivation, or how the relation was found that the action should be stationary for the correct path. I understand that the principle of least action is something that is purely observatory, but I don't get how they discovered this relationship.

Pic unrelated.
