I think it's fairly obvious that the intent there is to generate a powerful magnetic field upon the X-Rays striking the diamond. The effect this had (and the reason ignition was achieved) was turbulation the protons much like laundry in a washing machine (over a very short timescale) and this resulted in a sufficient number of near-collisions of protons that odderons were created. These odderons caused a secondary and entirely separate compression phase during which the genuine fusion occurred.
