a mind generates consciousness- vision, ideas, thoughts, emotions and behaviour
by comparing its inputs to its needs and generating an apropriate state (or the closest thing to it that it can) in response

if you identfy with you're conciousness you're already dead
on the other hand mutable as they be the underlying mechanisms that make you self-aware are pretty consistent
and furter identifing yourself as "category of people who I have been and will become" is pretty useful
heck you can extend it to include your descendants, family members, your cat who cares as long as your at it thus neatly resolving the whole problem of alturism
