there was an actual purity scale that was more serious than this meme.

anyway just posting this

Good field of study. Not great, or best, but good.

Also, do like I did. Look for jobs -> find none -> go for masters while looking -> graduate -> still find none -> starts a PhD while looking -> ???

Also mathematicians make more money but you would have to sell your soul to a random insurance/finance company co-operating with Business Administration guys.

How do you do the scientific writing style (no idea what it's actually called)? I'll delete this thread as soon as I've got an answer. Thanks.

So I found this book that has 200 chem experiments and now I need to find a place where I can buy all the usual chem lab equipment. Any idea where such a place would be in the Vancouver area? Help would be much appreciated

pic related; all real sciences are good sciences

I am planning on doing an experiment where I carry out electrolysis on water and I need some information.

1) Can normal copper wire be used as electrodes and will this effect how fast the water dissociates into hydrogen and oxygen?

2) Does the concentration of ions effect the rate of dissociation mentioned above? If so, how?

3) How is it possible to recombine the hydrogen and oxygen to form water again? I have read that having platinum in the mixture helps, but I need confirmation

pic related; I am diverting from my normal learning of math/physics to do this chem experiment

When you hear the word science, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? I have a feeling that majority think about chemistry. For me it's physics though.

perhaps this may help you decide. Btw first year classes are not hard. Bascially a more indepth look at work done in high school. Well... atleast for physics.

Hello my fellow /sci/entists and applied /sci/entists,

I'm currently a mechanical engineering student with a long way to go but, lately I've been romanticizing the idea of running away from it all and switching to the physics department.

Truthfully, my love for physics is what brought me to mechanical engineering in the first place. I like the idea of working in a field where I can apply my knowledge in a 'practical-now' way but, statics has cast a dark shadow on what I previously though this line of work would be like. Maybe this is not the same in all cases but statics essentially feels like an unnecessary dumbing down of a handful of concepts I learned in my Newtonian physics course last semester. If anything I've learned some simple terminology and some easy tricks to help me forget the concepts and just chug your way through the longer problems but, that isn't what I want from these classes.

I have some friends who are majoring in physics and math and they tell me I should switch and that engineering isn't for people like me. My friends in engineering tell me that there isn't enough jobs out there for me to feel secure about switching to physics. Sadly, money is a huge factor here as I come from a poor family and didn't do well enough in high school to get much in the way of grant and scholarship money.

tl;dr: Mechanical engineering student romanticizes about the life of a physicist while working about his future finances.

I would like to know how some other /sci/entists feel about what they are doing. Lets have an open discussion thread about our fields of study/work and how we feel about them.

Also any type of advice or nostalgic ramblings related to my personal dilemma would be appreciated as well.
