probably a mix of more recognition of the condition (boomers would just try to beat it out of them) and possibly some degree of over/mis-diagnosis.

if you dont display symptoms of the disorder between birth date and 3 years old you do not have it...sometimes its present at birth (symptoms) and in most cases i believe it has a sudden onset, usually around 1-2 years old...that or it just takes the parents/care givers a little longer to actually notice what's going on. things like aversion to sound, lights, extreme hand flapping, echolalia, when the child *seems* deaf or impervious to pain, or very sensitive to touch (it can be hypo and hypersensitive)...the child not responding to their name or engaging with adults/other children is a big red flag. you cannot assume their behaviors are due to conditioning or abuse, 1-3 year olds should always respond to their names and seek engagement with their parents. if they're not responding to their name and wont try to engage in pretend play that's a big warning sign they are autistic.

i know this because ive done a lot of research on ASDs, been around other autist and am on the spectrum myself and i could see myself on old video footage of when i was a baby/toddler and all the tell-tale signs were there. my face is pretty much like the autismo is in pic related.

the thing is to the majority of the public if you're not a head banging retard who screams and self injures, has seizures or whatever else, you're not considered truly autistic. if you're very high functioning (independent and can have sex) then people insultingly say that "you're not really autistic" or "they must've made a mistake" etc. it only becomes very apparent when a person spends time with you and they see your traits/behaviors, especially the lack of empathy. the empathy deficit is very obvious when you're in a friendship or relationship with someone. others freak out at over labels (family).
