So what if we're the only life to have evolved in the entire universe? What if we are the only hope for sentience to survive? If we die, life dies with us.

Anyone here good with predicate logic? Because I am not and I need help solving this proof.

1. (x)(~Rx v Nx)
2. ~(Ǝx)Nx v (Ǝy)(z)Szy ∴ ~(Ǝx)Rx v (z)(Ǝy)Szy

If someone just tells me where to begin I could get it from there, I just have no idea where to start. Using Demorgan's Law on the disjunctions has gotten me nowhere.

So /sci/, let's say there are many intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations out there. Let's say they even have some kind of technology to broadcast signals that could reach us. But what if they communicate much more quickly or much more slowly than us? Would this make communication difficult - if what we say in one sentence takes them an hour or more, or if they can speak volumes with just a few clicks or beeps or something? Are all intelligent civilizations trying to communicate each other like a bird might try to communicate with a fish?

I have friends that argue that childbirth/pregnancy is "ugly and disgusting".

Personally, I believe it's one of the most natural things humans do, and the whole process itself is quite beautiful what does /sci/ think?

So I have watched "A Universe from Nothing".
Please help to understand. As far as I know these are facts:
1) There is no centre to the universe in space, everywhere is equally the centre
2) The overall curvature of space is open and flat (as opposed to closed like a sphere or open like a saddle)

These two facts seem to contradict. Unless, the universe is infinite in size and matter. If it isn't, then there must be a centre of mass to the universe. If it were spherical, then it can expand without a centre, and it can be finite. But Krauss said they proved it was flat. So there must be infinite matter?

"Commander, we have a problem in one of our quadrants."
"Yes, what is it?"
"It seems we've discovered life on a planet we had once considered uninhabitable."
"Oh? What do the records say about it?"
"Apparently, this planet was close to a cargo route of ours. It was a restricted area, but one of our ships flew over the planet long enough to dump their waste on it and then leave."
"So?"
"Well, the bacteria from the waste evolved after a few billion years and gained sentience. This isn't an uncommon occurrence, but still noteworthy nonetheless."
"So let me get this straight: The bacteria living in the shit in my ass grew up and became sentient?"
"More or less, sir."
"I see. Destroy the planet. Leave no evidence of its existence. We can't have new life running amuck through our galaxy everytime it spawns, especially from our own waste. Ugh."
"Right away, sir."

And that's how I predict the world is going to end.

I was thinking about a mission to mars and how psychologically difficult it will be for the team to spend about 3 years in a confined space but then I started to wonder...

Why can't we use a drug induced coma for the most of the time? We can even have 2 people monitor everything and switch every two weeks or whatever.

Does that make sense and if not why not?

What's the most understandable physics textbook for a Chemistry major of average intelligence?

I have Phys II coming up in the spring, and I've been unhappy with the course text [Serway and Jewett], so I'd like to supplement it with a second one.

I'd prefer answers from people who have tried more than one book.

Hey /sci/

Who else just likes to ponder how huge and awesome the universe is?

Earth is pretty sweet, but I am sad I cant just surf the cosmos and know the near infinite space that our universe offers.

Pic related, my face when I realize how big our observable universe is.
