Emotions are a type of survival mechanism to augment our perception of experience of our circumstances to heighten our senses or to help us differentiate between negative and positive elements in our lives and surroundings. In this highly advanced, relatively safe society of today's first world- they don't help us survive but rather- harm us by preventing us from continuing to utilize logic and reasoning as opposed to the chemical hints our brain would like to use to inspire and automate us into behaving a certain way.

Because our surrounding are so safe (usually) these "emotions" will still categorize our observations in this fashion but it will be regarding much more petty situations than "there is a lion over there" or "my family hasn't eaten for 2 days"

They strip us of our free will to a certain extent.
