It's human nature to tribalize, and to draw attention to the "other" to make themselves feel better.

Suggestion: have fun with it. If you're in a position to do so, you can use it for a little fun competition to spur higher performance from everyone.

Some people find enjoyment n those things, just like some people find enjoyment in painting while others dont.

Its not that hard to grasp

As a Christian and a D&D player, my biggest problem with both Christians and D&D players is that they don't understand just how MECHANICAL and non-sorcerous the magic systems of role-playing games IS. It is purely rational, it merely assumes the existence of various sorts of "arcane" energy that can be manipulated for desired effects.

Now, a REAL magic system would describe pure mysticism, i.e., a relationship to the divine, or some other unknowable and unfathomable spiritual being. That relationship would be the foundation of all sorts of irrational will-workings.

In the meantime, you've got fundamentalists who assume that your teenagers are playing D&D and developing (at best) an interest in things magical and sorcerous, when in fact, there is no such thing, and (at worst) communing with some sort of spirit-beings telling them secrets.

WHEN IN FACT....there are only Oreo snack-cookies(tm), Mountain Dew(tm) and general nerdity going on.

This is where you fucked up, Reed. You're failing your scientific obligation to be completely objective. There is no evidence to indicate that we will ever leave this petri dish we call "Earth".

I'm glad you were bitten by the Sagan-Cosmos bug, and there really IS no reason we can't imagine a future "out there", but don't assign inevitability to something that may well be out of our grasp, else what's a heaven for?

Nope. I asked a question the other night about the speed of falling objects and I was SORELY disappointed in the IQ of /sci/.

So, it's basically me and one other guy here who knows what they're talking about.

That's not a good idea. Scientists are bright and rational, but they aren't necessarily WISE, if you understand what I mean. I think a technocracy would result in an oppressive totalitarian regime of functionality, but utopia would never be reached. The human spirit, beauty and art would be crushed by endless rationality and objectification.

Take communism or fascism. Here were (and are) examples where the well-being of the state takes precedence over the well-being of a community. Language is controlled. Discussion is controlled. Lives become "controlled" because the scientists are no longer making observations and testing hypotheses, but are attempting "social science" which has devastating effects. You'll end up living in Orwell's "1984" because those with both intelligence and power don't have the wisdom to know when NOT to use it.

Trust me. I'm an owl. We see this shit all the time.
