In 1988, STS-27 was badly damaged during launch due to a foam strike that almost destroyed space shuttle Atlantis, but didn’t due to the random chance of the area under the damaged tiles being stainless steel and resistant to reentry heat.
If STS-27 had failed, only two years after Challenger exploded, how would history have changed?
