I could believe that. Analytical chemistry isn't nearly as competitive as other subdisciplines, but it's still mildly competitive. I know people who decided to go go instrument design instead of synthetic because they liked the better job prospects. And by that I mean they liked having decent job prospects.

OP, if you want to go into chem for any reason other than you just think it's the most interesting field, I would stay away. If you think it's the most interesting field I say go for it.
