The only way in which the mystics were right was that in the end they all advocate living a simple life as best you can, while maintaining conscious awareness.

They all eventually realise they were chasing there own tails.

Most people don't realise it's their won tails they're chasing until they bit down on it and howl out it pain, scarred from the experience of self-discovery.

The ones who were able to have these experiences and integrate them, return to themselves knowing that most others would not survive the journey, this is why they all eventually return to a basic message of love and conscientiousness.
