The big difference is that with centralized leadership and without worrying about elections China can set long term goals a western democracy simply cannot.

They will overtake USA in 20 years max and it's very possible that within 30 years they will be more technologically advanced then the west.

Assuming everything works fine and they don't have sudden problems. Chinese economy is soling down a bit and with average chinese becoming richer and more educated Party leadership may fall apart.
