So scientists found a particle consisting of four quarks. Is SU(3) safe or is it back to the chalkboard for the next 10 years?

>You were never the smart kid that baffled the chemistry teacher by asking what held the repulsive proton in the nucleus together and what held the electrons in the orbits from collapsing into the protons.

>You will never be remembered as that smart kid

Space exists because it is one of the possibilities an all-powerful mind would compose out of its own being.
QCD (Quantum ChromoDynamics) and string theory do a great job at explaining how some very "complicated" (actually unintuitive) behaviour arise from this space, but there must be a more intuitive explanation for it all, on the lines of Maxwell's electromagnetism equations or Newton's General Gravitation, both are intuitive as forms of wave in an ideal medium or the workings of a fluid that has peculiar atributes

Can someone explain to me how the Higgs field would explain the diverging of the electromagnetic and weak forces? Also, how does the Higgs field cause certain particles to have certain masses? What exactly is the Higgs boson particle? Is it a force carrier for the Higgs field?

Sup /sci/?

18/m/uk who isn't going to university this year. My grades were good, I just couldn't ever decide what to study. I'm thinking of applying this year, what would you /sci/entists recommend and why? I'm currently in steady employment with a decent wage, I just feel like it isn't really what I want to do. fyi, there isn't any specific thing I'm interested in, I just love the VIDY- I mean the SYANCE!

TL;DR WAT SHUD BABBIE STUDY?

It's probably older (note neutrino names and masses)
Also has less information in general

We would probably need a multi-tier approach. We need the confidence to make the leap to introduce this technology even though it involves allowing foreign objects to interact with our minds, we would also need to open up other avenues for research especially genetic science but also education, psychology and self-discipline. There are also social issues with this. what about those who can't afford this technology? With so many university graduates how will we find a place in society for them?

It's just an attempt to mathematically model matter and energy as waves (1 dimensional objects, hence strings) instead of particles (0 dimensions, just a point).

That's pretty much it, it isn't "beautiful", "spiritual", "elegant" or "mystical" (all who use these terms to describe science are superstitious luddites), it isn't the theory of everything, it isn't proven or disproven, it's just an apparent line of speculation.

Try to calm down.

There is still a lot we don't understand even if we have whittled down fundamental sciences to high energy particle physics as opposed to the science of development which has branched out into various new fields, there still is no theory of everything, which means there is still potential for more knowledge.

I need a good starting point to immerse myself in Modern Physics.

I did Pure Mathematics and Further Pure Mathematics and Physics till A-Level. I have no Chemistry/Biology background.

What would be a good few books to start me off?

I like science. I don't know why, but I do. It's logical and interesting. It helps me connect to the universe I live in. It helps me understand who I am, where I am and why I am. For me, there's nothing more interesting than quantum mechanics. I want to know more about the universe. I want to work at Fermilab. I'm currently getting my bachelors at U of I, I love physics and I love math.

I love biology and chemistry. I love knowing how a neuron works, I love thinking about how I think. I love picturing what my internals look like. I love trying to grasp all the life on earth. I love looking at people and mentally dissecting them, knowing how they work. I love marveling at applications of chemical engineering.

The only thing I love more than knowing is learning. I'm so excited for my career, I can't wait to be my own teacher.
