Consciousness has been demonstrably shown to be the communication of different sections of the brain. When you plant an shock a section of the scalp when a person is awake, the brain communicates to the other sections to process that feeling the first part did. But if you conduct the same experiment when a person is asleep, the reaction in the brain is localized to that section alone. Monkeys and birds are both Conscious, its an emergent feature of higher brain function.

my lecturer wrote (we have to calculate a gradient for a scalar field)
for vectors a and r and a scalar field phi(r):
(a x r)^2 = |a| * | r| - (a*r)^2
is this a correct identity?
lecturer is just a student of a higher year and didnt seem competent
