What does /sci/ think of data mining?

What sorts of things do you need to know to do anything significant with it, like understanding patterns in the human genome and finding information in large databases?

Will data mining become a standard job in the future? Will it replace engineers as the typical job for anyone mathematically/scientifically oriented?

Who do you think was the better number theorist: Ramanujan or Gauss?

We all know that overall Gauss was just unbeatable, but in regards to just number theory, which takes the place on top?
