I know the answer to this one.
Because medical care for children is pretty much all paid by the government and the government likes to categorize things for easy accounting, standardization, and to monitor for fraud.
Autism has a HUGE spread of symptoms.
Is is much easier to diagnose a child for Autism then it is to check for dyslexia, psychological nervousness, etc.
Basically Autism has become the default diagnose for any kid having developmental difficulties that are not clearly physical in nature (blindness, deafness, etc) or mental deficiencies.(retardation)
