F9 separates around 80km, so ballpark around that altitude

you need get enough tangential velocity (aka orbital velocity) to match Earth's gravity and radius
if you were to fly straight up to 70km, you would fall straight back again
and because Earth is rotating under you you would actually fall many kilometers westwards
that's why F9 and SH boosters need to do a bit of curve to land back where they started
