Leadanon here.
The most likely what happened is roughly this:
Civilization slowly evolved as people evolved.
People got less healthy over time, the reason was a mystery.
Attempts were made to find the cause, which failed.
People tried to get rid of the newer stuff, which failed to bring results. Despair lead to the plan for complete cleanup, which was done.
Nobody thought of what was removed, rather than what was created. The cause was actually the depleted heavy metals.
An even harder collapse was triggered by the cleanup. Thousands of years of suffering resulted, as the malnourished people were too retarded to figure out anything.
Mining of lead made people wake up and triggered to short lived golden ages.
Modern people noticed the missing lead in several centuries old bones and sediments, unaware that they were looking at samples from after the apocalypse.
Lead was removed as contamination, and the clown world ensued.

The past civilization is obscured by the removal, as well as misdated finds, this may be especially likely the case in the indus valley civilization, which may be much older than commonly believe. Notice the Neanderthal and even Erectus proportions of the figurines (in pic).

Neanderthals and Denisovans possibly may have been able to leave Earth.
